 CG Aviation History
It could be said the Coast Guard's introduction to aviation took place in 1903 when the surfmen from the Kill Devil Hill Life Boat Station of the US Life saving Service provided the Wright Brothers with additional man power during the pre-launch activities of that epic flight.
In 1928 an aviation section was established at Coast Guard Headquarters under the command of CDR Norman Hall.
Lieutenant Elmer F. Stone was transferred from the aviation detail aboard the USS HUNTINGTON to the Bureau of Construction and Repair where he became the chief test pilot for seaplanes in the aviation division.

 Victor Carlstrom, 1890-1917
At the outbreak of WW I, Victor was one of the foremost aviators of his time, receiving a First Lieutenant commission signed by President Woodrow Wilson.
They were also the first two aviators to take planes for a flight from Curtiss field on the afternoon of December 29, 1915.
Because of a heavy fog it was necessary for the aviator to steer by compass.

 Early Military Aviation History in Texas
The immediate result of this crash was that the base commander, General William Carter, forbade all flying at Fort Sam Houston and banished the aviation section from its grounds.
In 1915, a detachment from the Squadron began operating out of Brownsville and Mission, Texas, and in November 1915 the 1st Aero Squadron moved en masse to the former Remount Depot at Ft. Sam Houston.
It was originally designated as Camp Kelly, in memory of the first Army aviator to die in the crash of a military airplane.

 The United States Air Force
In December 1915 the Aviation Section consisted of 44 officers, 224 enlisted men and 23 airplanes--still a tiny force when compared to the fledgling air forces of the European powers.
By this time the Aviation Section consisted of the Aeronautical Division, the Signal Corps Aviation School at San Diego, the 1st Aero Squadron (then on duty with the expeditionary force in Mexico), and the 1st Company, 2d Aero Squadron, on duty in the Philippines.
In October 1916, Aviation Section plans called for two dozen squadrons--seven for the Regular Army, 12 for the National Guard divisions, and five for coastal defense -- plus balloon units for the field and coast artillery.

Born in 1915 in Luverne, Alabama, Hudgens’ love of flying began at age 15, shortly after hiss family moved to Birmingham.
Montgomery Aviation sold aviation fuel, provided aircraft maintenance, flew charters, conducted flight training, sold aircraft and, in 1947, was one of the first firms in the nation to rent cars at an airport.
In 1986, Hudgens was inducted into the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame and honored with a portrait-plaque cast in aluminum that hangs in the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham—not far from where his love affair with flight began.

 Lawrence Hargrave, Australian aviation pioneer, 1850-1915
In the 1890s a small number of inventive technologists were working to translate infant aviation theory into airplanes.
The French (who thought that France was the cradle of aviation) freely acknowledged Hargrave's influence: Alberto Santos-Dumont was the first European to fly a heavier-than-air machine constructed of Hargrave box kites in 1906.
While the Wright brothers denied that they owed anything to Hargrave, his discovery of the cellular kite and his investigations into the superiority of curved wing surfaces played an important part in European experimental work which culminated in the first public flight by Santos-Dumont in France in 1906.

In late 1915, Tom Benoist, St. Louis' earliest aeronautical entrepreneur, had arranged to construct his large Type 15 twin engine, six-seat flying boat in the St. Louis Car shops, lacking sufficient room in his own facilities.
The company remained dormant until the so-called "Lindbergh Boom" in aviation developed in the wake of Lindbergh's heroic solo flight from New York to Paris in May, 1927.
An ingredient of this surge in aviation activity was the advent of powerful, reliable, air-cooled radial powerplants to replace the bulkier W.W. I-vintage water-cooled OX-5 and Liberty engines.

 Albert Cushing Read, Rear Admiral, United States Navy
He was detailed to Naval Aviation in 1915 for a flight across the Atlantic in charge of NC-4 seaplanes, in a trip from Rockaway, New York, to Plymouth, England, via the Azores, Portugal and Spain (57 hours, 16 minutes flying time).
He was born in New Hampshire in 1887 and was graduated with high honors by the Naval Academy with the class of 1907.
Returning to regular Navy aviation duty he successively served in numerous important commands until World War II when he became Chief of the Air Technical Training in Chicago and then commanded the Navy air activities at Norfolk until the end of the war.

 Chanute Air Museum
Joseph M. Pallissard was born in St. Anne, Illinois, on 4 January 1886.
He left his family farm in 1913 to take up aviation at Cicero Field in Chicago, and later formed a partnership called the Pallissard School of Aviation.
In June 1915 he built his own aircraft and soloed for the first time.
