 Article 3
Second, the Science Society represented a different kind of civil society from the conventional Western model: it was not an institution conceived in opposition to the state but rather one that maintained intimate and complex connections with successive governments, both national and local, throughout the Republican era.
Thus in October 1915, the Science Society renamed the Science Society of China (adding Zhongguo or China before kexueshe), was formally reorganized as a comprehensive scientific society, the first in modern Chinese history.
At this time we are still troubled that science is not being promoted adequately, troubled that science education is not being developed, and troubled that the force of science is not enough to sweep away the evil spirit that spreads all over the country.

19 May 1915 Eruption of Lassen Peak
Although early investigators arrived at this conclusion, it was subsequently abandoned in favor of an interpretation that stressed the generation of the lahar by heat exchange between a dacite lava flow and the residual snow pack.
During May 1915, eruptive activity included volcanic blasts, formation of major lahars, and the emplacement of a dacite lava flow (Table 1).
The characteristics of the eruption that occurred late on the afternoon of 22 May 1915 are discussed in Eppler (1987), and a more expanded treatment of the eruptions of May 1915 and a discussion of the lahars that they generated may be found in Eppler (1984).

Balboa Park, Science & Education Bldg
The Science and Education Building, built at a cost of $44,328, was of sturdy wood-frame construction with walls of wood lath and plaster.
Beginning with G. Aubrey Davidson in 1915 and Eugen Nehuaus in 1916, citizens, critics and architects have stressed that new buildings on El Prado should be copies of the old or so similar that their presence would not vitiate the integrity of the overall scheme.
In 1964-65, the 1915 Science and Education and the 1915 Home Economy Buildings were replaced with buildings in modernistic architectural styles.

As publisher of Scientific American, Piel became a roving ambassador of good will for science, and he sometimes tapped other staffers of the magazine to join him: longtime employees fondly remember times in the late 1970s when Piel brought the entire staff with him on trips through the then-Soviet Union and China.
In addition, Piel held many other positions of note throughout his career, including president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and membership on the boards of the American Museum of Natural History, the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation and the Mayo Clinic.
He was a landmark figure in journalistic letters, and he directly promoted the growth of science as much as any one person could.

In the century since the Nobel Foundation was established, many have speculated on the reasons why Alfred Nobel did not provide for a prize to be awarded for achievement in the field of mathematics.
Surely an eminent man of science such as Alfred Nobel could not simply have forgotten about mathematics, so he must have had a good reason for omitting it.
With no obvious reason at hand, people invented one, and as usual the invented tale had a bit of salaciousness to it: Alfred Nobel deliberately avoided establishing a prize for mathematics out of vindictiveness because a prominent Swedish mathematician was carrying on an affair with his wife.

 Christian Science
Christian Science was founded by Mary Baker Eddy [nee Mary Ann Morse Baker], who was born in Bow, NH on July 16, 1821.
For example: She mentions "the practically rejected doctrine of the predestination of souls to damnation or salvation." (Science 150) She says "this teaching is even more pernicious than the old doctrine of foreordination—the election of a few to be saved, while the rest are damned." (Science 38)
Eddy recognized the Deity as masculine and feminine, "Our Mother-Father God;" allowed herself to be represented as the equal and successor to Christ and was so revered by her loyal followers; wanted to be called "Mother" ["Mother Eddy"]; and stressed silent prayer.

Lateral Science - Electricity by Contact of Dissimilar Metals
The production of electric charges by the mere contact of two dissimilar metals was first discovered by Rev. Abraham Bennett, in 1789, and that it was verified by a different method by Tiberius Cavallo, in 1795.
To the present writer this seems the actual sequence of phenomena, viz., a redistribution of the charges of the surface atoms of the metals, a consequent change in surface cohesion and a resultant oxidation of one of the metals.
