Art in America: 20th century AD
He discovered the word flux (Latin fluxus) by opening a dictionary, according to Emmett Williams, and putting his finger on a word at random, exactly the way Tristan Tzara supposedly found the word Dada in 1916 in a Larousse dictionary.
Fluxus was actually born in Wiesbaden in September 1962 in a festival of works with the grand title "Fluxus Internationale Festspiele Neuester Musik." This was the first public appearance of the word "Fluxus." Maciunas chose Wiesbaden because he was working as a designer-architect with the U.S. Air Force there.
Some Fluxus artists say that if George Maciunas--the Lithuanian expatriate, entrepreneur and one-time art dealer--had not named the tendency and rounded everybody up, publishing the work and producing concerts and exhibitions, we would not know of these activities now.

 Simultaneous/sound POetry - Dada - anti*matters - The Spirit of Bohemia
Automatic poetry springs directly from the poet's bowels or other organs, which have stored up reserves of usable material.
Karawane ("Caravan" in English) is an example of Ball's own particular contibution to Dada, the sound poem (lautgedicht), and one of several such poems he recited, among other occasions, at the Waag Guild House in Zurich, July 14, 1916, wearing a cardboard "Shaman's costume."
Krokodilcoiffeur und dem Spazier-stock ('The Hyperbole of the Crocodile's Hairdresser and the Walking-Stick').The Surrealists later christened this kind of poetry 'Automatic Poetry'.

 English Literature 2: 1916
Worth looking at i) Yeats's 'Easter 1916', challenging relations between art, aesthetics, poetry and historical reality in a comparable way; ii) D.H. Lawrence's view that 'the old world ended in 1915'.
The Defence of the Realm Act of 1916 did indeed destroy many of the old individual freedoms in favour of state control, as well as bringing in many measures we still encounter: paper money (another odd act of signification); British Summer Time, pub-opening hours.
Such growing autonomy is one of the lessons that may be drawn from close examination of 1916.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 1916
This was the first manifestation of a new poetry in which free individuals, led only by the logic of their imagination, worshipped beauty for its own sake.
Born in 1859 into an old family of the Swedish nobility, he first wanted to be a painter, but he abandoned the study of painting to devote himself to his vocation as a poet.
In truth it gave the final blow to the realistic school, enemy of all imagination, which was then dominant in Sweden and which since 1880 had darkened literature with its sadness and its gloom.

Yeats was aloof from politics before 1916, a nationalist, but a fence sitter when it came to methods.

Science Fair Projects - Robert Graves
The horror of his wartime experiences had a profound effect upon him; he published his first volume of poems, Over The Brazier, in 1916, but he later tried to suppress his war poetry.
Holding that love was the only true subject for poetry, Graves confined most of his poetry to short lyrics, many of which require an understanding of The White Goddess for full comprehension.
In his poetry, Graves was an iconoclast, decrying many of the developments of the modernist schools of poetry, and holding highly individual views about the value of many works in the literary canon.

About Countee Cullen's Life and Career
Cullen won more major literary prizes than any other black writer of the 1920s: first prize in the Witter Bynner Poetry contest in 1925, Poetry magazine's John Reed Memorial Prize, the Amy Spingarn Award of the Crisis magazine, second prize in Opportunity magazine's first poetry contest, and second prize in the poetry contest of Palms.
In 1916 Cullen was enrolled in Public School Number 27 in the Bronx, New York, under the name of Countee L. Porter, with no accent on the first "e." At that time he was living with Amanda Porter, who generally is assumed to have been his grandmother.
Countee Cullen himself stated in Caroling Dusk (1927) that he was "reared in the conservative atmosphere of a Methodist parsonage," and it is clear that his foster father was a particularly strong influence.

 Biography of Rabindranath Tagore
Among his fifty and odd volumes of poetry are Manasi (1890) [The Ideal One], Sonar Tari (1894) [The Golden Boat], Gitanjali (1910) [Song Offerings], Gitimalya (1914) [Wreath of Songs], and Balaka (1916) [The Flight of Cranes].
The English renderings of his poetry, which include The Gardener (1913), Fruit-Gathering (1916), and The Fugitive (1921), do not generally correspond to particular volumes in the original Bengali; and in spite of its title, Gitanjali: Song Offerings (1912), the most acclaimed of them, contains poems from other works besides its namesake.
Although Tagore wrote successfully in all literary genres, he was first of all a poet.
