Statistics Canada, established in 1918 as the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, is the nation's central statistical agency.
In addition, Statistics Canada is a scientific research organization responsible for leadership in the development of statistical and survey design methodologies and techniques.
The Canada Handbook, the monthly Labour Force Infomat, The Canadian Economic Observer Monthly, a weekly summary of statistical highlights, the Statistics Canada Daily, vehicle of first release for agency data, now available through the Statistics Canada website, and Canadian Social Trends, a monthly journal of topical articles, are among the agency's most widely used publications.

CM Magazine: Far From Home: Canada and the Great War Series.
Far From Home: Canada and the Great War, the NFB series of ten videos which totals just over five hours of viewing time, examines Canada's role in World War I. The so-called Great War was a watershed for Canada: in terms of its self-perception, and its perception in the eyes of the international community.
Canada's performance in the war was renowned both in terms of its sheer size and the quality of its fighting forces.
Canada's World War I Minister of Militia and Defense concentrated power in his own hands, insisted that the Canadian military use the ill-conceived Ross rifle and liberally promoted his cronies.

About half of the Germans who settled in Western Canada in the pre-1914 era were from the German colonies in Russia-- from Volhynia, Bessarabia, the Odessa region, the Crimea, the shores of the Sea of Azov and the banks of the Volga.
The relatively smooth admission of Hutterites to Canada in 1918 came to public notice later, arousing a storm of wartime suspicion and protest against these German-speaking pacifists.
When the Hutterites moved en masse in 1918 to Canada from the U.S. due to wartime persecution, 10 of their former South Dakota colonies were established in southwestern Alberta.

 Civilization.ca - Scholars - Canada and Submarine Warfare, 1909-1950 - 1914-1918
Canada ultimately raised over half a million troops for overseas service, but the underwater dimension of warfare continued to draw the country into naval action -- now out of necessity rather than as a politically useful alternative to an expensive and controversial squadron of major warships.
He was dumbstruck by the Admiralty's assumption that Canada had sufficient civilian marine resources quickly to extemporize anti-submarine patrols at the moment of crisis: in mounting the tiny St. Lawrence patrol he was already scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Although most of the anti-submarine craft were ultimately turned over to the RCN, the inundation of Canada's undeveloped shipbuilding industry meant that a large proportion of the ships from both the Canadian and British orders could not be completed until the spring and summer of 1918.

The Canada War Book of 1918 has entertained us a few times throughout the past semester, but perhaps the most 'entertaining' is Chapter 3 entitled 'What Germany Stands For: What if Germany Should Win?’ Obviously when a nation is at war its first, and continuing goal is to demonize the enemy.
The Canada War Book of 1918 was a continuation of this Propaganda intended to keep the nation 'on-side' just a little longer.
The second tactic that nations seem to use against the enemy when trying to gain popular support for war is the obvious one of dehumanizing and demoralizing the enemy.

Almost a whole month ago, the 15th of February to be precise, Canadians, from Vancouver to Saint John's, celebrated the 34th anniversary of the official hoisting of the Canadian National Flag.
The first flag of Canada was the Fleur-de-lis, a French flag which obviously contains the Fleur-de-lis, the Symbol of the French Monarchy which is also used on the Quebec provincial Flag.

Whilst a role remained for the German cavalry in the remaining years of the war, they never quite seemed to recapture the essential nature of their traditional fighting character.
There were notable exceptions, of course, such as the campaigns in the Balkans, the withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line in 1917 and the 'Kaiserslacht' Offensive of March 1918.

Until recently, published literature has largely focused on RCN participation in the Battle of the Atlantic during the period 1939-1943, and all but ignored the major contribution of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) to maritime defence.
The present paper explores the influence of submarine warfare on the development of the Canadian forces prior to 1939, the impact of earlier experience on Canadian participation in the Second World War, and in turn how the course of that conflict shaped Canada's maritime forces in the post-war era.
