VCEART - Ideas about Contemporary Art   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
For art historians and other cultural commentators, contemporary art begins in 1945, post–WWII, with the rise of Abstract Expressionism, or with the shock of Pop art in the early 1960s.
Art as a practice has become more and more open about the tensions and insoluble dilemmas that it poses rather than attempting to overthrow the immediately preceding movement or style or participate in the hierarchisation of low and high practice or subject.
Contemporary art mirrors artists' traits for compulsive innovation, their distaste for doing just what has been done before because of each artist's drive to be in some degree original.
