The baseball portions of the movie -- and there is a great deal -- are outstanding (Costner IS believable as a pitcher, and his friend/catcher is also on the ball) and the romantic relationship bits can be quite touching as well, though perhaps overly dramatic.
Actually, most of the baseball movies made recently have been quite successful in the box office and in overall popularity.
