 Chain D.L.K. - Interview with 1919
The direction the music was meandering did not thrill me and I cannot remember why I let it go that way in the first place, but with hindsight etc. The whole music scene in 1984 was all over the place, maybe it was confusion.
I named the band and the music was written by Mick and myself, so you never know we may join up later- that would be cool as F**K. But really, I am happy with the new 1919 and the future will have many collaborations with different musicians.
Like I said I have assimilated a lot of musical styles over the last 21 years and music has changed dramatically, from analogue to digital, and the new guys have brought their element to the new 1919 sound too.

I have often wondered that music seems to have been, but for the operations of the York Musical Society, almost at a standstill in York since the war began, and I am not surprised to find Mr.
But it cannot cover the whole ground, and orchestral and chamber music are on the whole of greater artistic value, and it is only because they do not afford the same possibilities for amateurs to take an active part that they are less cultivated.
Probably the York Musical Society has enough on its hands without undertaking any further responsibilities, and, if is like other similar societies, it may even be affected by a certain jealousy of other forms of music than that which it cultivates, a condition of affairs which is lamentably narrow-minded, but undoubtedly exists.

The music is stately and melodiously sumptuous, utilising plump orchestration and tense layers of keyboard.
Recorded with a band - Cale alongside Lowell George, Wilton Felder & Richie Hayward - with the UCLA Symphony Orchestra and producer Chris Thomas, `Paris 1919' remains one of Cale's strongest albums - though I'm as enamoured with `Fear', `Helen of Troy' & `Music for a New Society'.
It's pop music, of sorts, `Child's Christmas in Wales' has the studio nous of Steely Dan and operates in a similar plain to the Eno-era work of Roxy Music.

The music on this album is indeed some of the gentlest he ever recorded - pop songs (his own slightly skewed variety, of course...) recorded in Los Angeles in 1973, augmented by some lovely orchestral arrangements.
PARIS 1919 is definitely a transition album from his beautiful THE ACADEMY IN PERIL (1972), which is my all-time favorite from his catalogue, to the harsher music that would follow - but an essential document for anyone who wants to understand the complete artist.
Cale's singing on 1919 had a world weary distance to it, which suited the reflective jabberwocky of the songs; stretched out vowells on,'planing lakes', 'elephants that sing','looking out from here at half past France.' It was far from banal music, however saccharine the orchestral moves from strings, viola & piano Cale painted.
