		The direction the music was meandering did not thrill me and I cannot remember why I let it go that way in the first place, but with hindsight etc. The whole music scene in 1984 was all over the place, maybe it was confusion.

		PARIS 1919 is definitely a transition album from his beautiful THE ACADEMY IN PERIL (1972), which is my all-time favorite from his catalogue, to the harsher music that would follow - but an essential document for anyone who wants to understand the complete artist.
		Cale's singing on 1919 had a world weary distance to it, which suited the reflective jabberwocky of the songs; stretched out vowells on,'planing lakes', 'elephants that sing','looking out from here at half past France.' It was far from banal music, however saccharine the orchestral moves from strings, viola & piano Cale painted.
