  Film History of the 1920s
Films really blossomed in the 1920s, expanding upon the foundations of film from earlier years.
Films varied from sexy melodramas and biblical epics by Cecil B. DeMille, to westerns (such as Cruze's The Covered Wagon (1923)), horror films, gangster/crime films, war films, the first feature documentary or non-fictional narrative film (Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North (1922)), romances, mysteries, and comedies (from the silent comic masters Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd).
Film theaters and studios were not initially affected in this decade by the Crash in late 1929.

To avoid having one side of the film thicker than the other, films with magnetic soundtracks often have a "balance stripe." This is a thin blank mag stripe on the opposite edge of the film from the magnetic sound track that keeps the film level on the reel.
Films with magnetic tracks (and especially separate full-coat mag tracks) have shown to be more susceptible to vinegar syndrome, and should be monitored more closely than silent films or reels with optical tracks.

 Film Distribution
Film distribution is the marketing branch of the industry and a necessary, though often resented, link between production and exhibition.
Since the early 1920s, the Canadian distribution sector has been overwhelmed by these multinationals: though there are approximately 80 Canadian distribution companies, the largest 8 (all subsidiaries of Hollywood multinationals and members of the Motion Picture Export Association of America) receive about 80% of total rental revenues.
When the Film Products Importation Act was tabled in June 1988, the original proposals had been considerably weakened and, during the free trade negotiations that followed, the federal government apparently agreed to abandon even those.

Film studios were confronted with many problems related to the coming of sound, including restricted markets for English-language talkies.
Lubitsch's first sound film The Love Parade (1929) (with Jeanette MacDonald's debut appearance), exhibited the director's creative adaptation to the requirements of sound film, and was one of the first backstage musicals with musical numbers that were integral to the plot.
The film was originally released as a silent film, but the studio pressured Hitchcock into adding dialogue sequences (with innovative post-synchronization techniques) for a talkie version.

Eddie Polo was a legendary stuntman in the 1920s silent film world, but very few of his films remain.
In its early days, silent film was seen as a transitory production, and movie companies such as Paramount and Universal dumped entire archives into the Pacific Ocean, melted nitrate prints to extract the silver, or used the flammable stock for special effects on their back-lot sets.
History Detectives ventures to Kentucky and Ohio to determine whether this reel could be one of thousands of silent films once thought to have been lost forever to film history.
