Women were 44% of the total number of graduate students in all the sciences, and 48% of the total number of graduate students in the biological sciences.
These statistics about women in science and engineering are accumulated biannually by the NSF in a continuing study of women, minorities and persons with disabilities in science and engineering.
In contrast, perpetuating the idea that science is "hard" and therefore only available to an "elite" with the inherent ability to deal with the material provides permission for faculty to continue to "weed out" rather than educate students with a genuine interest and aptitude for biology, and its predecessor courses, math, chemistry and physics.

Although Slosson emphasized that interest in oddities and superlatives was legitimate and that Science Service should not disdain to gratify it, it was imperative that it try to extend this interest to an appreciation of the ordinary phenomena of nature and the fundamental aspects of science.
By emphasizing that science is a fallible human enterprise and not a dogmatic set of laws like the Ten Commandments, Slosson believed history of science could humanize science and also prevent the rejection of its validity during periods of theoretical controversy.
The use of the frontier and pioneer images as symbols of science and scientists may predate the twenties by a century or more, but after the closing of the American frontier in 1893, these images acquired a special significance, particularly for Edwin Slosson, whose father was one of the first settlers in Kansas.

To train those biologists who will be researchers, resource managers and educators of the early twenty-first century, the severe and complex problems that contribute to the attrition of potential female and minority scientists must be addressed.
The most prominent factors identified as contributing to the under representation of minorities and women from the science pipeline are: weak background in science and math; lack of self-confidence in ability to perform science; misconceptions about the nature of careers in science; and the lack of exposure to, and opportunity within, the scientific community.
As a step towards achieving this goal I obtained a NSF CAREER grant that incorporated an educational component designed to nurture interest in biodiversity and extend the perceived career options of inner city 7th and 8th grade minority students.

This is obvious both from the dates of manufacture of the earliest instruments (1923) and the catalogs of the college: prior to 1925 the catalog lists courses taught at Berkeley, while the first obvious Humboldt course descriptions occur in the 1925 catalog.
