By 1923 the postwar depression seemed to be giving way to a new surge of prosperity, and newspapers hailed Harding as a wise statesman carrying out his campaign promise--"Less government in business and more business in government."
In August of 1923, he died in San Francisco of a heart attack.

On May 2, 1923, Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators pitched a 3-0 shutout versus the New York Yankees.
The shutout was the 100th of Johnson's career and it made him the first (and only) pitcher with 100 career shutouts - yet the event when virtually unnoticed.
Other notable dates during the 1923 season included: July 22 - Walter Johnson becoming the first to join the 3,000 Strikeouts Club; September 4 - Sam Jones no-hitter (the second by a Yankee) over the Athletics; September 7 - Howard Ehmke no-hitter over the Athletics (again!); and September 14 - George Burns unassisted triple play.

The defeat of the General Strike had led to the complete severance of any links between the Labour Party and the Communist Party, as the Left- Wing Movement, a movement of constituency parties sympathetic to the CP was effectively proscribed and constituency parties disaffiliated.
Although the election was a defeat for Labour, the National Government taking 70% of the vote, and Labour was decimated in Parliament, its vote from the high point of 1929 only fell from 8.3 million to 6.6 million.

An arrest may be made, under a warrant or without a warrant, by any sheriff or other officer acting as sheriff or his deputy, or by any constable, acting within their respective counties, or by any marshal, deputy marshal or policeman of any incorporated city or town within the limits of the county.
When a vacancy in any election precinct is occasioned by the death or removal from such precinct of the constable thereof, the judge of probate must notify the governor.
When the office of constable is vacant or the constable is interested in an action, or in case of emergency, the execution or attachment must be executed by any constable of the county in whose hands the process may be placed or may be executed by the sheriff as in other cases.

 Stanley Baldwin Biography | Encyclopedia of World Biography
In 1923, on Bonar Law's retirement, the King, on the advice of elder statesmen, selected Baldwin as prime minister, passing over Lord Curzon because he was in the House of Lords.
In an effort to reunite the Conservatives, Baldwin proposed a protective tariff and plunged the country into a general election in 1923, which brought Conservative defeat and the first Labour government.
Baldwin himself was content to rest on the slogans "Safety First" and "Trust Baldwin" in the election of 1929, which brought defeat to the Conservatives.

After winning two consecutive General Elections, in January and December 10, held over the issue, Asquith passed the Parliament Act of 1911, which drastically cut back the powers of the upper chamber, and limited its ability to reject government finance bills.
Despite losing his East Fife seat at the 1918 General Election, Asquith remained leader of the Liberal party until 1926; that is, among those Liberals who did not support Lloyd George's coalition government.
