 Electric Traction
In England a patent was granted in 1840 for the use of rails as conductors of electric current, and similar American patents were issued to Lilley and Colten in 1847.
All that is needed to cause the car to move along the running rails is to supply current through an overhead wire or third "conductor rail." This wire or rail will serve as a "return" for the electric current to the dynamo in the power station.
This conductor rail was set one inch below the level of the running rails, and wooden ramps were provided at points and crossings to carry the collectors over the rails, thus avoiding a short-circuit.

Because transportation activities have so many impacts related to sustainability, it is important to identify strategies that help achieve multiple objectives, and avoid those that solve one transportation problem but exacerbate others (Comprehensive Planning).
Sustainable transportation therefore requires that broad equity analysis be incorporating explicitly in transportation planning (Evaluating TDM Equity).
Sustainable transportation planning tends to be particularly important in lower-income, Developing Regions, since they have more limited resources, tend to rely more on alternative travel modes, and are currently making critical planning decisions which will determine the type of transportation system they will have in the future.

Clulow: Multimodal Transport in South Africa   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Contractual multimodal transport takes place when a single person assumes responsibility for the goods throughout the entire carriage from A to B regardless of whether he is physically involved in the carriage of the goods.
The legal problems caused by contractual multimodal transport include whether a multimodal transport document is a document of title, whether the mandatory carriage regimes apply and how can the different mandatory carriage regimes be reconciled in the case of a multimodal transport operation.
The difference from the pure network system, is that if the damage occurs during a mode of transport which is not subject to a mandatory carriage regime, or if one cannot establish during which mode of transport the damage occurred, then the liability will be governed by the provisions of the multimodal contract itself.
