The game was played after the close of the NFL season and under the rules of the period it is certainly questionable that NFL jurisdiction should have extended beyond the playing date, December 6, 1925.
They were the only two NFL teams who found any reason to play a game on the official last day of the 1925 season.
NFL President Joe Carr was not pleased to see stars like Henry deserting the league to play for an independent coal region team, but there wasn't much he could do about it unless Pottsville joined the league.

At their July meeting, NFL owners had agreed that the 1924 season would begin on September 27 and end on November 30.
Both sets of Bulldogs were mediocre in 1925 and Deutsch gave up his Cleveland franchise after that season.
They played only seven games in that first season, but they had a shot at the championship, with a 3-0-3 record going into their final game against the Canton Bulldogs, who were also undefeated.

In 1950 the New York Bulldogs change their name to the New York Yanks, the Baltimore Colts folded after the season was over and the NFL realignes it's divisions.
In 1952 the New York Yankees folded, the NFL sells the assets of the Yanks to a Dallas group to become the Dallas Texans, folding mid season and playing the rest of their season as a road team.

 Pottsville, PA to receive Pioneer Award - Pro Football Hall of Fame
The Maroons were reinstated in the NFL in 1926 and played three more seasons before folding in 1928.
However, before their first league season was completed, Pottsville, coming off a much publicized win over the “big city” Chicago Cardinals, played an exhibition game against a non-NFL team in Philadelphia’s Shibe Park.
In recognition of Pottsville’s pioneering support of the NFL and the community’s undying spirit and pride, the NFL owners and the Pro Football Hall of Fame unanimously agreed to proclaim the City of Pottsville, the winner of the 2004 Daniel F. Reeves Pioneer Award.
