Ross Youngs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born in Shiner, Texas and educated at Texas Military Institute, Youngs made his major league debut in 1917 with the New York Giants and played his first full season in 1918, placing 6th in the league with a.302 batting average.
Youngs's career was abruptly cut short in 1926 when he was diagnosed with the kidney disorder which at the time was called Bright's disease.
Youngs was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

 Current Biography Excerpts: Baseball
Considered by most baseball authorities to be the best lead off batter in the game's history, Rickey Henderson of the Oakland A's possesses the four ideal traits of a number-one hitter--blazing speed, the ability to hit for both power and a high average, and a keen batting eye.
In one of the most lopsided trades in the history of professional baseball, in 1982 the Phillies sent the veteran Larry Bowa and the young prospect Sandberg, whose future was thought to be limited to duties as a utility infielder, to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a young shortstop.
He became involved in baseball at an early age as a third baseman, catcher, and pitcher on American Legion and sandlot teams, but he insists that he was merely a mediocre player.

In 1927, as the United States continued its return to normalcy after their involvement in the Great War almost a decade earlier, it was a time when President Calvin Coolidge was trying to run the country very quietly, literally.
Baseball was not only about run production, but also run reduction, and defensively the Yankees were more than capable, viewed as a solid club with the leather and posting a fielding percentage of.969.
The young infield consisting of Gehrig at first base, the versatile Lazzeri at second, Koenig at shortstop, and veteran Dugan at third base, was steady and dependable, sometimes bordering on sensational, and even though they had turned the fewest double plays in their league they were also a team that didn’t beat themselves very often.

 Seth Swirsky -- Baseball Letters
Major-league baseball has still not fully recovered from the strike eight years ago (it didn't help my writing career any, either), yet once again the limos are lining up to whisk away the game's multimillionaires to whatever private paradise they inhabit during the three months they're not being paid millions of dollars to have fun.
When the minds of ballplayers are not occupied with the woeful unfairness of their lot in life, I don't know what they're thinking about, some of these guys, because it's sure not the game.
Baseball fans, more than fans of other sports, are said to be stats-crazy, but they have also always been fascinated by the unusual.

Baseball has always been about fathers and sons, courage and love, but no fiction has ever brought them all together with such rich sentiment, hilarious history and an eye for the game.
Mix ingredients—truth, fancy, multiple eras, fathers and sons, baseball mothers, and baseball groupies—and cook in the heated imaginationof a deft writer who adds a touch of whimsy and has a flair for characters.

1927 Honey Boy Baseball Cards Set (cycleback)
Recently, Michael Tedesco (Little Beauties) auctioned off what is believed to be a unique complete set of baseball cards on eBay-the 1927 Honey Boy Ice Cream set.
I purchased an accumulation of about 10-15,000 cards and items of ephemera from the trustees of the estate in November 1998, and the Honey Boy set was part of that purchase.
I set the reserve based on a "guesstimate" of about $100 each for the 9 Canadian minor leaguers, $200 for each of the 3 common major leaguers, $250 for each of the 8 Hall of Fame players --other than Ruth -- and $1,500 for the Ruth card.
