The range of topics was varied, but characteristic of the scope of interests and activities of the Press's owners: literature and literary criticism, original poetry, art and aesthetics, biography, sociology, politics, and economics.
The Essays deal chiefly with literature and literary criticism, with an occasional number on aesthetics or politics.
The Hogarth Press published eight of the Lectures from 1927 to 1936 (Lectures for 1932 and 1933 were not published).

 Akutagawa Ryunosuke
Primarily Akutagawa wanted devote himself entirely to literature and refused invitations to teach at the universities of Tokyo and Kyoto.
However, he was not blind to the struggle of his own generation, and its radicalism, which can be read from his essay 'What is Proletarian Literature', written in 1927.
Akutagawa committed suicide on July 24, 1927, at the age of thirty-five.
