THE purpose of this brief sketch is to show the humble origin of rail transportation, the mistakes that have occurred in railway operation for military purposes, the present high state of its development and its effect on the strategy of warfare.
Transportation is the corner-stone upon which the whole structure of modern civilization is reared; and the corner-stone could not be laid until the railroad was produced.
The most notable achievement of the rail transportation division of the Quartermaster General's office during the year 1865, was the transportation to their homes of the Armies of the West and of the Potomac after their review by the President and his Cabinet.

 Refrigerated Transportation Timeline
Most of the early refrigerated transport of perishable goods was carried out by ship and by train.
Henry Peyton Howard (1829-1913) of the United States transported a shipload of beef frozen in a salt-ice mixture from Indianola, Texas, to New Orleans and served it in hospitals, hotels and restaurants.

 Austria's Rail Transport
At the beginning of the nineteenth century increasing trade called for improved transport, and this led to the construction of Austria's first railway.
Gerstner advocated a horse railway from Linz to Joachimsmuhle, but left the project in the hands of his son, who in September, 1824, was granted by the Emperor Franz I the exclusive right of building a wood and iron road between Mauthausen, on the Danube, and Budweis (now called Ceske-Budejovice).
The first section was opened on September 7, 1827, and the centenary of the event was celebrated in 1927.

 Ministry of Transport
The Ministry of Transport was established in March 1932 by the Ministry of Transport Act (No.3, 1932) which embodied legislation for merging the transport administration authorities.
The Transport (Division of Functions) Act (No.31, 1932) abolished the Board of Transport Commissioners established under the earlier Act and divided the Ministry of Transport into three Departments, each under the control of a Commissioner, namely, the Department of Railways, the Department of Road Transport and Tramways and the Department of Main Roads.
The objective of the study was to determine the transportation needs of the Sydney Region to the year 2000, to propose a series of alternatives to meet these needs, to evaluate the costs and benefits of each, and to develop a plan that best satisfied the future needs of the Sydney area.
