Shortly after the end of the 2003 summer season, the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County, which owns the Hollywood Bowl, replaced the 1929 shell with a new, somewhat larger, acoustically improved shell, which had its debut in the 2004 summer season.
But never during its long and illustrious history has the Bowl's programming been limited solely to symphonic events; fully staged operas were a regular part of the season in the early years, and the famed Bolshoi Ballet appeared during the 1950s.
A "hit" from its very first season (1922), the Hollywood Bowl has remained popular and accessible to a wide cross-section of Southern California's diverse population.

In fact, Friedman’s 20 TD passes in 1929 was every bit as impressive as Marino’s all-time mark of 48 TD passes in a season set in 1984.
