The greatest progress and development of the Clydesdale horse in Australia, has, however, taken place in the 30 years up to 1936…to the almost complete elimination of other draught breeds….
In 1904, the committee due to report on the establishment of a stud book for Draught Horses in Australia recommended the publication of a Draught Horse Stud Book for Victoria, to include Clydesdales, English Shires and Suffolk Punches - each breed to occupy a separate section of the book.
The first volume was published in 1907, and until after the last issue of its seventh volume, the Draught Horse Stud Book of Australia was the only stud book for draught horses published in Australia.

The 1930 penny is probably the most famous of all the Australian Commonwealth coins.
Most 1930 pennies seem to have been struck using the Calcutta die but there are reports of specimens minted with the London die.
The reverse was made from a model struck with the Birmingham die (177 denticles) whereas all genuine 1930 pennies were struck with the London reverse die (174 denticles).

1930 sovereigns have the new smaller head portrait of King George V, which was used from 1929 to 1932 inclusive, making these quite desirable from a type collectors point of view.
Only the Melbourne and Perth Mints in Australia and the Pretoria Mint in South Africa issued sovereigns in 1930, The mintmark is visible on the ground above the centre of the date.
In 1930 it would appear that the Perth Mint must have been using very worn dies, and perhaps striking using old dies, as all the 1930 Perth Mint sovereigns we can remember seeing have been weakly struck, as you can see from our photographs.

Although not the rarest Australian numimatic item, the 1930 penny is the key coin to obtaining a full date set of Australian pre-decimal issues.
In many respects, the 1930 penny is a numismatic phenomenon - on the surface, the value of the coin appears to be well in excess of values which would normally be associated with a coin with over 1,500 known examples.
It is known from a long-serving employee who worked at the mint during the depression years that a small number of 1930 penny dies (possibly two) were produced, even though the decision not to mint the coin for circulation had been taken in late 1929.
