These unprepossessing pieces of paraffin wax were used by James Chadwick (1891-1974) early in 1932 in experiments which established the existence of neutrons, particles found alongside protons in the nuclei of atoms.
These pieces were placed in the way of radiation emitted by beryllium, which had been bombarded by alpha particles (helium nuclei).
From his measurements of the energy of the protons and nitrogen nuclei, Chadwick concluded that they had been hit by particles with the same mass as the proton but which were electrically neutral: in other words, the neutron predicted by Rutherford.

Then the situation changed, the pace of transports increased, and there were days when 10,000 to 12,000 deportees arrived, including thousands who had died en route and others in a state of exhaustion.
This state of affairs disrupted the "quiet welcome" designed to deceive the deportees into believing they had arrived at a transit station and that before continuing their journey to a labour camp they must be disinfected.
