Overview of the Golden Age of Comics
Comic books became so popular the readership was measured in the millions per issue rather than thousands as it is today.
Some comic book historians mark the beginning of the Golden-Age as the year 1933, when the first book in comic book format was released.
Eventually smaller publishers, who were having a hard time competing with larger comic book publishers (who were subsidiaries of companies already in the publishing business), added horror comics to their mix.

This new concept in comics, of a person who led what outwardly appeared an ordinary life but who possessed extraordinary powers to do things that the rest of us could not do, and which were used to fight crime and evil, proved to be an enormous success.
DC Comics themselves produced a number of very successful super-hero characters during the Golden Age of comics including Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, the Spectre, the Atom, Sandman, Hourman and Dr. Fate, with the Justice Society of America featuring a team-up of DC’s best heroes.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: DC Comics
And its Action Comics was the first to feature a superhero — Superman, who quickly became the first hit character to emerge from the fledgling comic book medium, and the first character to star in his own regularly-published comic book.
In 1967, DC — by that time, America's largest comic book publisher — was itself acquired by Kinney National Services, which changed its name to Warner Communications a year later, when it later bought the Warner Bros. movie studio.
DC Comics may or may not be the "Comics Publisher of the Century" — but considering its size, its staying power and its corporate connections, it's certainly one of the century's biggest successes in comics.

But originally, the whole idea behind that comic was quite radical--imagine an entire comic book of new stories devoted to one theme, not a hodge-podge of reprints shoved between two cover for a fast buck.
In the case of Detective Comics, the theme was mystery and detection.
Over the years, Detective Comics would play host to a slew of various detectives, be they cops, district attorneys, criminal lawyers or, especially private eyes, shooting it out or dukin' it out with the bad guys.
