If this were 1940 or 1950 the rails probably would have gotten a bailout and the airlines left to twist in the wind,as it was they who were the dominant movers of passengers and freight.
What has clearly happened is that rail travel has been allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that beyond commuting most Americans couldn't care less.
What's needed is strong political will to analyze just where rail travel makes sense and then fund it and use every power the government has to make it possible.
