However, as the standardized meter of dance music and of marching suggests the coordinated battalions of a mechanical collectivity, obedience to this rhythm by overcoming the responding individuals leads them to conceive of themselves as agglutinized with the untold millions of the meek who must be similarly overcome.
They aimed at musical adaptation to reality--a reality understood by them in terms of the "machine age." The renunciation of dreaming by these composers is an index that listeners are ready to replace dreaming by adjustment to raw reality, that they reap new pleasure from their acceptance of the unpleasant.
Music that permits its listeners the confession of their unhappiness reconciles them, by means of this "release," to their social dependence.

Finally, with "1941," John went half crazy and all gung-ho attempting to fit a score to a movie that tries to make World War II a comedy spectacular.
"1941" is about a mix of characters whose reaction to the "invasion of Hollywood" is at times so extreme that we wonder what on earth is keeping them from blasting into orbit.
The complete score for "1941" (every single note to be found in the final film) is available on isolated tracks on the Collector's Edition Laserdisc and DVD of "1941," available from Universal Home Video.

Leo B. Forbstein’s prime musical talent at Warner Bros., Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Franz Waxman clearly had the plum scoring jobs but such was the studio’s volume of output that there was room for the work of other composers.
More action orientated than the straight thriller scores, the music is nevertheless in a similar mould, with taut suspense writing to the fore, punctuated by snarling bursts of intense confrontation.
The plain and for some uncomfortable fact is that not all "golden age" film music is good, and even some of that which is great does not in itself make for rewarding listening shorn from the silver screen.

Boasting a star-studded ‘70s cast and Spielberg’s biggest budget to date, “1941” should have been the glittering jewel in a three-cornered crown of critical and financial triumph, completing the set started by “Jaws” and “Close Encounters.” As Al Gore once said, you can’t win ‘em all.
Calling “1941” a bad movie is ignoring a salient fact: namely, that it’s a stupendously bad movie.
The director’s cut of the film clocks in at almost two and a half hours, and I counted the number of actual laughs on the one hand I wasn’t using to fling the DVD case at a neighbor’s dog.

But in 1941, several factors, including employment obligations, the onset of World War II, and a move away from New York City, affected Simmons' sheet music purchases.
