The 1943 Surprise Hurricane struck the (additional info and facts about Houston, Texas) Houston, Texas area on July 27, 1943.
While not a major (A severe tropical cyclone usually with heavy rains and winds moving a 73-136 knots (12 on the Beaufort scale)) hurricane, the storm was described as the worst since the 1915 hurricane, which tested the newly constructed seawall at (A town in southeast Texas on Galveston Island) Galveston.
This hurricane was first detected on July 26, 1943.
