The arrival of the first P-47Cs in mid-1943 addressed the problem of the aircraft's short combat radius, as this model could be fitted with an external tank.
Slowly, as combat tactics evolved in units like the 56th and 78th FGs, pilots learnt how best to fly the Thunderbolt in order to effectively counter the more nimble Luftwaffe fighters.

In November, 1991, I spent a few days in Hay - the first time since 1943-44 - and saw the grounds where we used to be, now back to dry grass land and only marked by a plaque that recorded it as a POW site, and a memory to the 'Dunera Boys'.
Hay WT Unit owed its origin to a decision that the POW camp should have wireless communication as well as phone links.
