Florida is situated mostly on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida.
It is bordered on the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama, and on the west, at the end of the panhandle, by Alabama.
Until the mid-twentieth century, Florida was the least populous Southern state; however, the local climate, tempered by the growing availability of air conditioning, made the state a haven, and migration from the Rust Belt and the Northeast sharply increased the population.

This was chaotic at best and with Florida's growth in the middle of the 20th Century just beginning, the state Legislature recognized that a new system was needed to better serve the public and commerce.
The information is taken directly from a report received from the Florida Department of Transportation issued by the State Road Department on June 11, 1943 with some notes added later.
Florida's growth was tremendous in the last half of the 20th Century and many, many new state roads have been built since that time.
