Their mission is to provide police aviation services to the Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies throughout the state including; traffic control and enforcement, aerial photography, searches and emergency transportation of command and technical personnel.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Aviation Section is being praised by authorities for identifying a problem and implementing a program to reduce reckless driving in Ohio.
The Aviation Section helicopters play an important role in manhunts, searches, night patrol, SWAT team tasks and other missions where low, slow flight is required.

Stuart Symington was sworn in as the first Secretary of the Air Force on this date, and on the 26th General Carl A. Spaatz was sworn in as Chief of Staff.
The Aviation Cadet program, suspended since the end of World War II, was reopened and programmed to train 3,000 pilots over the next two years.
The Secretary of the Navy directed that the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School at NAS Ottumwa, Iowa, be moved to NAS Pensacola, Florida, within the period 1 June to 1 August 1947.

In rare instances, aviation midshipmen flew combat missions in the Korean War.

Aviation experts confirm that in dives in an experimental plane over California desert in October 1947, Welch became the first pilot to break the sound barrier.
In the beginning of December, 1941, Welch and 2nd Lt. Kenneth Taylor had moved their P-40s away from the main airfield at Wheeler to a nearby auxiliary field at Haleiwa as part of a gunnery exercise.
Welch began testing the prototype P-86 (later redesignated F-86) Sabre, a new jet fighter which combined the aerodynamic advances of the propeller-driven Mustang with the lessons of swept-wing research the Germans had developed for their jet aircraft toward the end of the war.

After the war they continued the project under the bureau designation I-310, which first flew in 1947.
