  1948 arab-israeli war - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
The 1948 Arab-Israeli War, called the "War of Independence" (Hebrew: מלחמת העצמאות) by Israelis and "al Nakba" (Arabic: النكبة, "the catastrophe") by Arabs, was the first in a series of wars in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
It established the state of Israel as an independent state, dividing the remaining areas of the British Mandate of Palestine into areas controlled by Egypt and Transjordan.
On May 26, 1948, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) was officially established and the Haganah, Palmach and Etzel were dissolved into the army of the young Jewish state.

 1948
At the beginning of the War of Independence in 1948, the Arab armies assumed they would be facing the same group of soldiers they had almost defeated the last time.
In 1948, Arab armies seemed to continue to advance, and the Israelis had to concentrate their forces in one spot just to hold ground.
The War of Independence served to widen the already wide gape between the Arab states.

Moreover, the wars have been at least partly fought in areas crowded with civilians (the whole of Palestine in 1948, the Gaza Strip in 1956 and 1967, the West Bank and Golan Heights in 1967, and southern Lebanon and Beirut in 1982).
There-after, in each subsequent war, and in the interregnum between wars, there were progressively fewer atrocities, a point Gen. Rafael Eitan, the IDF chief of general staff, went out of his way to make when assailed for his troops’ behavior during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
Indeed, both the 1967 war (when the IDF overran crowded cities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip) and the 1973 war (when the IDF conquered the populated west bank of the Suez Canal) were marked by almost no civilian casualties.

This article by David Horovitz, caught my eye because of his notion that this war is simply a continuation of the 1948 War of Liberation.
For it occurs to me that every war Israel fights, and there have been eight wars since 1948, is a continuation of the War of Liberation in one way odf=r the other--except for the 1956 Suez War.
There are those who have branded this latest conflict a continuation of Israel's War of Independence, and there is no little truth in the assertion.

The monastery of Latrun and the adjacent fort built by the British became famous in 1948 as the site of three bloody battles, which were outstanding and controversial failures of the Hagana and Israel Defense Force in the 1948 War (War of Independence).
The Arab states, in particular Egypt, Syria and Transjordan, promptly declared war, and those three countries, with reinforcements from Saudi Arabia and Iraq, invaded both the territory allotted to the Palestinian state to be and territory allotted to Israel.
Supplies had improved by May 1948, but even as late as the battle of Latrun, the Alexandroni brigade stripped the soldiers of the 32nd battalion of their rifles before detaching them to the 7th brigade, because there simply weren't enough rifles for each soldier.

The war, and the flight of the refugees, known in Arabic as the Nakba (disaster), were central formative events that determined the national character of Israel and of the Palestinians, and helped to define the conflict in its present terms.
