To drive the "Indianapolis 500," in those days, was to submit to four hours of physical torture, as the cars danced over the slippery brick surface, on the main straightaway, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Second year "500" driver and 1949 AAA Champion Johnnie Parsons, the winner of the rain-shortened 1950 "500," was driving one of the smaller dirt track style racers.
The heavy front wheel drive racers, which had dominated in the immediate post-war runnings, of the "500," were being challenged and replaced by the smaller designs, which were also raced on the dirt miles, during the rest of the AAA season.

The first special is signed by TONY GAZE who was a former war time pilot that enjoyed success in Australia, after World War II, racing his Alta in all available events in the 1947 to 1950 period, before basing himself in UK to race.
He scored at total of 29 points in the ten Indy 500 races that he competed in, coming second in 1952, 57 and 59.

Over the next 8 years Watson Roadsters would win Indianapolis 5 times with Rodger Ward in 1959, Jim Rathmann in 1960, Ward in 1962, Parnelli Jones in 1963 and A.J. Foyt, Jr., in 1964.
Jim Rathmann also won the 1958 Monza 500 and the 1959 Daytona 100 in Watson Roadsters.

Frank Kurtis built his first Indianapolis 500 race car in 1941, and his cars won the race in 1950 and 1951.
Bob Sweikert, in a KK500D, won the 1955 Indy 500 which was overshadowed by Vukovich's fatal accident.

Jack B. Hinkle, who owned cars that Jack McGrath placed on the front row of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race five years in a row during the early 1950s, died in his sleep Jan. 31 at his home in Wichita, Kan. He was 90.
McGrath was back in his familiar third-place starting position in 1955 and led six laps, but a magneto problem ended his race after 54 laps in 26th place.
He was right back in third again for the start of the 1953 race and came home fifth.

For whatever reason the Novis missed the 1950 "Indianapolis 500." But Duke Nalon qualified for pole position for the 1951 "500" with a track record 137.049 mph for one lap and 136.498 mph for four laps.
Actually Bettenhausen pioneered the use of the jet pilot style helmet in the 1953 "Indianapolis 500." This was the immediate predecessor to the full-face helmets, which were introduced by Dan Gurney in 1968.
In retrospect Pat Flaherty isn't one of the more noteworthy winners of the "Indianapolis 500." Other than his win from pole in the 1956 "Indianapolis 500" he has little else to show from his career.
