Aviation had an enormous impact on the course of World War II and the war had just as big of an impact on aviation.
Aviation was poised to advance rapidly following the war, in large part because of the development of jets, but there still were significant problems to overcome.

History 100 - New Technologies and Airplanes
Rather than looking at the people, events, and machines of aviation history in great detail, and focusing instead on a phenomenon that was almost religious in nature during the first quarter of the twentieth century; a “winged gospel,” as historian Joseph Corn calls it emerged in the United States.
Aviation interests in turn valued women for their traditional domestic image; the fact that they were present in the field offset the public’s view of the “intrepid birdman stereotype” who risk-taking and daring verged on folly.
Aviation lost its magic and wonder in the post-modern world of the United States when it was finally understood that an airplane was simply one of two things only; it was either a weapon or a vehicle, and nothing more.

One symptom of this conflict was a showdown between the Air Force and the Navy over the role of carrier aviation in the national security framework of the United States.
This rejection fueled the Navy’s fear that naval aviation was to have a diminishing role in the new atomic age and provided the final impetus for a clash between the Air Force and the Navy.
During the latter hearings, high-ranking naval officers voiced their opinion that naval aviation was being denigrated by a Defense Secretary enamored with possibilities of strategic bombing and scornful of the Navy’s contribution to such a mission.
