The process character of music, its transitory nature, and its significance as a "time" art was emphasized, whereas "opus music" due to its object character became suspicious, conservative.
Due to misconceptions in regard to improvisation and due to varying new artistic approaches, many composers came up with new terms such as indeterminacy, aleatory, open form, experimental, and meditative music and provided their own new definition of improvisation.
The manifold new concepts of improvisation that were developed in the middle of the last century indeed puzzled a great many performers and listeners as well and stirred up the conservative music world.

 Music After 1950
Departing from intuitive aspects of the musical grammaródensity, cadential gestures, motivic/intervallic identityóand extending analytical strategies of Jonathan Harvey, David Roberts, and Peter Owens, I examine harmonic progressions in the first song of the cycle that suggest a systematic approach to post-tonal voice leading.
In these instances, register and harmonic rhythm are the only features of the musical surface that recall traditional phrase structure; individual sets seem sufficiently different from one another to discourage any kind of consistent voice-leading, but, on the other hand, their juxtaposition suggests a gradation of change, a certain order within a relatively structuredócontrolledótransformation.
Following this intuition, and since the larger sets share subsets such as [0,1,2,5] and [0,1,2], the harmonic occurrences are hence rethought as the expression of simultaneities arising from the combination of smaller subsets.

Arkansas Historical State Song: The Arkansas Traveler
The music was by Colonel Sanford "Sandy" C. Faulkner (circa 1950).
There the wish to rhyme it with “Kansas” had been so strong about 1860 that two congressmen from the State had to be addressed by the Speaker of the House as "the gentleman from Arkansas" and “the gentleman from Arkansaw” respectively.
Benham is sure that it was not composed by Colonel Faulkner, and has heard, perhaps to the surprise of musical antiquaries, that it was either written by José Tasso, a famous violin-player who died in Kentucky some years ago, or produced by him from an old Italian melody.
