The 1951 season was a fairly active one.
The most notable storm of the season was Hurricane Charlie, which struck Cozumel, Mexico as a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, causing heavy damage.
Hurricane Charlie was the deadliest hurricane in the season, killing over 250 people and causing $575.6 million in damage (2005 USD) as it crossed through the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.

Bertha was an early-season Cape Verde Hurricane that moved across the islands of the northeastern Caribbean Sea as a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir/Simpson scale and made landfall on the North Carolina coast near Wilmington as a category 2 hurricane.
The last Hurricane to reach this strength, this early in the season, was Alma in 1966 (117K GIF) in the eastern Gulf of Mexico with 110 knots.
Hurricane warnings were issued from Sebastian Inlet, Florida to Chincoteague, Virginia as well as for the Bahamas and for the islands of the northeastern Caribbean Sea from Antigua through Puerto Rico.

Hurricane Dennis achieved category 4 intensity on July 7, which is the earliest in the season on record for a storm of that strength, according to the US National Hurricane Centre.
Category 5 Hurricane Wilma became a category 1 hurricane on October 18 and by October 19 was registering at 882 millibars, the lowest minimum pressure ever recorded in an Atlantic hurricane, and generated winds of more than 280 kph.

Now there is that big wave in the far eastern Atlantic, fortunately on the latest Meteosat image most of the advection seems to be gone, but it still looks as if it has already some rotation to it.
Normally, this early in the season we have to watch the Gulf of Mexico (see climatology), and indeed, this weak system is located about 80 miles south-southeast of Galveston, Texas.

With a weaker Atlantic Ridge, which occurs with a neutral or negative NAO, we can watch for the SST's in the Eastern Atlantic to be average, this year, as we have seen the years of active Tropical Cyclogenesis in the 1990's.

Weather Research Center’s Orbital Cyclone Strike 2003 forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season verified with the landfall of Hurricane Isabel on the East Coast of the United States.
Another interesting fact of this hurricane season was the Hurricane Claudette made landfall on the Texas coast close to the location that another hurricane in the 2003 phase of the OCSI, Hurricane Carla made landfall in 1961.
Another significant hurricane which made landfall in Texas in this phase was hurricane Alicia in 1983.
