Tropical Storm One apparently was not aware of the usual seasonal limits, and formed in the western Caribbean Sea on February 2.

Preliminary estimates of Isabel's precipitation indicate that interior Virginia bore the brunt of the rainfall from Hurricane Isabel.
Hurricane Juan initially appeared to be subtropical in nature, but after forming approximately 295 miles southeast of Bermuda on September 25th, it moved to the north-northwest and was classified as fully tropical.
As the storm recurved in the western Atlantic, hurricane warnings were issued for the island of Bermuda and Fabian's eye passed very slightly to the west of the island on the afternoon of September 5th.

We foresee an above-average hurricane season for the Atlantic basin in 2005.
Thus, based on this analysis, we expect 2005 to be an active hurricane season and in line with the average of eight of the last ten years (1995, 1996; 1998-2001; 2003, 2004).
Although many active Atlantic hurricane seasons feature no landfalling hurricanes, and some inactive years experience one or more landfalling hurricanes, it is found that, on average, the more active the overall Atlantic basin hurricane season is, the greater the probability of U.S. hurricane landfall.

In this paper, hurricane landfall probabilities are calculated for Florida and the East Coast separately and the regional impact of ENSO in the U.S. is evaluated.
The lack of difference in cold and neutral hurricane landfalls in Florida as compared to the difference observed along the East Coast is due to a decrease in East Coast hurricane landfalls during neutral events rather than a decrease in Florida hurricane landfalls during cold events.
Using this method, 23 of the hurricane seasons in the 99-year period are classified as cold events, 22 are designated warm events, and 54 are categorized as neutral.

With a weaker Atlantic Ridge, which occurs with a neutral or negative NAO, we can watch for the SST's in the Eastern Atlantic to be average, this year, as we have seen the years of active Tropical Cyclogenesis in the 1990's.

 First Storm of the Season - 1851-2005
The first tropical system (subtropical storms are ignored) ever to appear in the Atlantic was on February 2 in the year 1952, other early storms appeared on March 6 in 1908 and April 18 in 2003 (Ana) [storms before April 1 not shown in graph].
Early in the season that area is not conducive to tropical cyclone formation, since water temperatures are too low.
Early in the season most storms form in the Gulf or W. Caribbean, later on, when the central Atlantic warms up, more storms form there (for more details see a separate section).
