INDIANAPOLIS, Friday, June 3, 2005 – ABC Sports’ live broadcast of the 89th Indianapolis 500 on May 29 drew a national rating nearly 60 percent higher than the 2004 race and the highest rating for the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” since 1996, according to figures released June 3.
Patrick’s history-making drive in the 2005 Indianapolis 500, which saw her become the first woman to lead the race and then finish fourth – the highest-finishing woman ever at the “500” – led to a huge spike in retail sales.

To drive the "Indianapolis 500," in those days, was to submit to four hours of physical torture, as the cars danced over the slippery brick surface, on the main straightaway, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Second year "500" driver and 1949 AAA Champion Johnnie Parsons, the winner of the rain-shortened 1950 "500," was driving one of the smaller dirt track style racers.
The heavy front wheel drive racers, which had dominated in the immediate post-war runnings, of the "500," were being challenged and replaced by the smaller designs, which were also raced on the dirt miles, during the rest of the AAA season.

As usual the Indianapolis 500 was included in the World Championship but none of the Europeans went to The Brickyard in 1953.
Qualifying resulted in Bill Vukovich- who had nearly won in 1952- setting the pace with Fred Agabashian and Jack McGrath completing the front row while the second row was shared by Miguel Ayulo, Andy Linden and Tony Bettenhausen.
