  Biography: Kathleen Kenyon - Ancient Near East .Net
In 1934 Kenyon was closely associated with the Wheelers in the foundation of the Institute of Archaeology of the University College London.
Basil Hennessy, Emeritus Professor of Near Eastern Archaeology at the University of Sydney for example, was her assistant at Samaria and elsewhere, and has helped transmit her legacy to new generations of Australian archaeologists.
The British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, amalgamated within the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL) in 1998, was officially renamed the Kenyon Institute on 10 July 2003 in honour of Kathleen Kenyon.

Now I would not wish to lessen the significance of the rhetoric of destruction in the heyday of rescue archaeology - it certainly had an impact and a positive one at that; however, it is questionable whether we should still be using this rhetoric, in fact ask whether it may not be detrimental.
Until the emergence of an explicit theoretical discourse in archaeology in the latter part of the twentieth century, the predominant image of the archaeological process was one in which knowledge was acquired through discovery.
If archaeology creates a past, and development is creating a future, both are still working in the present and together they could constitute the historical process in potentially one of the most reflexive ways possible.

Historical archeology was in its infancy in 1953; the work at Sonoma was one of the first half-dozen such investigations done in California.
The 1953-4 archaeology exposed foundations of rooms that connected the convento to the church, but not the church itself--it appears that the church was located on private property, under the historic frame house to the east of the park boundary.
A well was found in 1953 near the center of the quadrangle, although the investigators concluded that it was a post-mission feature.

As regards archaeology, there was no question of excavations, as they were generally impossible at the time.
We know that this dig could not be completed, and that a later expedition of the British School of Archaeology of Jerusalem, directed by Diana Kirkbride, worked on revising and completing the conclusions (RB 1960, 65-92), and on distinguishing better the different periods between the end of the first century A.D. and the fourth century.
Qumran in his preliminary reports in the RB 1949, 1953, 1954, 1956, 1959, then in the Schweich Lectures of the British Academy in 1959, which appeared in a volume with the title “L'archéologie et les manuscrits de la Mer Morte,” London, 1961 (English Edition in 1973 : Archaeology and the Dead Sea Scrolls).

Archaeology has also revealed that the Hyksos buried their people in the fetal position and were involved in human sacrifice.
Though archaeology has been growing in popularity with Blums book "The Gold of the Exodus" I dont think the end justifies the means.

Baker's duties took him to hundreds of farms around the county, and it was fairly common for him to pick up arrow and spear points from the plowed fields, but he knew nothing as to the age or meaning of the artifacts other than as "arrowheads".
Baker had other interests in archaeology, for example, his work in the Kenton Caves, which is well documented in Lintz and Zabawa (1984), and in his own writing (Baker 1929a,b, 1953; Baker and Kidder 1937).
Baker was a member (affiliate member 1936-1941, active member 1944-1956) of the Society for American Archaeology from its beginning and he held his membership for the rest of his life (Anonymous 1937, 1939, 1941, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1955).

This site, which is maintained by myself tries to give an introduction to aerial archaeology, its methods, aims and applications.
About 4000 photographs from 1953 were e@ed and some 20,000 sites were identified on them and the details transcribed on transparent overlays at 1:25,000.
The Aerial Archaeology Research Group (AARG) provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information for all those actively involved in aerial photography, photo interpretation, field archaeology and landscape history.
