Baseball is played by amateurs of all ages, including numerous sandlot clubs and athletic associations, virtually every high school and college in the U.S., and scores of junior leagues.
Most early variations of baseball were played on a square field, with stakes at the corners serving as stations and a striker’s box situated about midway between the first and fourth stations.
Much controversy surrounded baseball’s reserve clause, which bound a player to one team until the player retired or was traded; if a player’s contract expired, and no new agreement was reached, the clause allowed the team to renew the contract annually.

His study on the reasons for baseball's eminence in American sports in the first part of the century, however, is frustrating.
The slow acceptance of radio, night baseball, fl players, the rise of the commissioner's office, and the ironclad nature of the reserve clause are among the topics looked at in the book.
The book does a good job examining some of the changes that took place between 1903 and 1953 in baseball that we take for granted today (night baseball, steel and concrete ballparks, etc.), but does get tedious at times with its wealth of somewhat arcane information.

Fast forward to Aug. 17, 1953, i remember the exact date because 2 days before i had just returned from a tour of duty in Korea,Dave, and Marty were home from College.
The same group that had gone to that game 10 years before, had just come from seeing Brooklyn beat the pirates, in 1953 the Pirates were being beaten all the time and we were winning all the time with what may have been our greatest team.
Over the weekend I called Dave and told him i was going to post this story and asked him about the baseball, he said his grandson still had it and was saving it for his son.
