To drive the "Indianapolis 500," in those days, was to submit to four hours of physical torture, as the cars danced over the slippery brick surface, on the main straightaway, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Going into the 1955 race, I knew that Wilbur Shaw was dead, the victim of a plane crash, in Northern Indiana, the previous October.
Second year "500" driver and 1949 AAA Champion Johnnie Parsons, the winner of the rain-shortened 1950 "500," was driving one of the smaller dirt track style racers.

Actually Bettenhausen pioneered the use of the jet pilot style helmet in the 1953 "Indianapolis 500." This was the immediate predecessor to the full-face helmets, which were introduced by Dan Gurney in 1968.

 Vukovich Death Car Located
When Vukovich drove the car in the 1955 "500" it was virtually indentical to when Pat O'Conner drove it in the 1954 Indianapolis race.
According to all the records available that particular car is Kurtis chassis 372, the same chassis Vukovich drove in the 1955 Indianapolis "500" and in which he died.
The main factors that drive the cost of the Roadsters up is the significance of its general history and whether or not it has won the Indianapolis "500".

I'm not going to compare him with todays Indianapolis 500 drivers or winners because I think Wilbur was in a class of his own.
So with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway being pretty much in a shambles with the lost interest among alot of people while Eddie Rickenbacker was running the show, it almost was converted to a Industrial Park.
Most racers from the 40's and 50's are just a memory and the tire marks and scratches in the walls are still there at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, just covered over by years of white paint.

Jack B. Hinkle, who owned cars that Jack McGrath placed on the front row of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race five years in a row during the early 1950s, died in his sleep Jan. 31 at his home in Wichita, Kan. He was 90.
McGrath was back in his familiar third-place starting position in 1955 and led six laps, but a magneto problem ended his race after 54 laps in 26th place.
He was right back in third again for the start of the 1953 race and came home fifth.

In the early laps Bill Vukovich worked his way through the field and he took the lead in the mid-race and he went on to win by nearly a lap, recording his second straight Indianapolis 500 victory in his Fuel Injection Special.
Jack McGrath was fastest in qualifying in his Hinkle Special, becoming the first man to break the 140mph barrier.
