In 1954, the Museum, the Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration began an historic collaboration to document, study, and protect archaeological sites within highway right-of-ways across New Mexico.
During the past fifty years, the highway archaeology program has recorded thousands of sites and conducted excavations at hundreds.
