Hurricane Janet was one of the most intense storms ever recorded in the Atlantic basin; it struck Belize as a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, killing hundreds and causing catastrophic damage.
The second Hurricane Alice of 1954 was originally believed to have developed in early January of 1955 and thus have been the first storm of the 1955 season; however, it was later discovered to have developed in late December of 1954 and was reclassified as a storm of the 1954 season.
Hurricane Ione was the final of three hurricanes to hit North Carolina this season.

As the storm recurved in the western Atlantic, hurricane warnings were issued for the island of Bermuda and Fabian's eye passed very slightly to the west of the island on the afternoon of September 5.
Hurricane Juan initially appeared to be subtropical in nature, but after forming approximately 295 miles southeast of Bermuda on September 25, it moved to the north-northwest and was classified as fully tropical.

With the official ending of the 2005 Atlantic Hurricane Season on November 30th, residents of the Atlantic basin, which includes the Carribean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, are breathing a sigh of relief and hopes that the season is actually over.
The only previous end-of-year storm was Hurricane Alice which became both the latest and the earliest hurricane on record in the Atlantic when it became a hurricane on December 31, 1954 and battered the Leeward Islands with winds of 85 mph (136 km/h) on January 1, 1955.
Unfortunately, the 2005 Hurricane Season will be remembered as a deadly season, the deadliest in the Atlantic since 1780 (2800-3000 estimated deaths) and the deadliest US hurricane season since 1928 with 1300-1400 lives lost.

Their onset well ahead of the start of the hurricane season indicates that they are a cause of the increased hurricane activity, and not an effect.
Hurricane Luis was of particular interest during 1995 because of its long duration at IH status and its destructiveness in the Caribbean.
