Vukovich was leading in 1955 when the front axle on Ward's car snapped, and in the ensuing melee Vukovich's car hit Ward's and catapulted over the wall.

According to all the records available that particular car is Kurtis chassis 372, the same chassis Vukovich drove in the 1955 Indianapolis "500" and in which he died.
When Vukovich drove the car in the 1955 "500" it was virtually indentical to when Pat O'Conner drove it in the 1954 Indianapolis race.
The main factors that drive the cost of the Roadsters up is the significance of its general history and whether or not it has won the Indianapolis "500".

 Indianapolis 500 history
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was founded by Carl Fisher in 1906, and the first Indianapolis 500 Mile Race was held in 1911.
That rift resulted in controversy prior to the 1979 race when the Speedway rejected the entries of the CART teams on the grounds they were not in "good standing" with USAC, which sanctioned the Indianapolis 500.
That year, CART announced a competing schedule which featured the U.S. 500 at the Michigan International Speedway on the same day as the Indianapolis 500.

 Tony and that first trip
The 1955 World Championship was shortened to seven events including the "Indianapolis 500." After Le Mans there were only three Formula One Grand Prix events held.
Actually Bettenhausen pioneered the use of the jet pilot style helmet in the 1953 "Indianapolis 500." This was the immediate predecessor to the full-face helmets, which were introduced by Dan Gurney in 1968.
It was almost as important to be at the track on Pole day as the day of the "Indianapolis 500." In 1956 there were three very important events each year in Indianapolis and the state of Indiana.

a medley of heroes and favorites
The race that "hooked" me on the sport of speed was the 1955 "Indianapolis 500," which I listened to on local Indianapolis radio.
Not only did "Big Al" win the "500" four times, he is also the all time competitive lap leader in the 87 year history of the "greatest spectacle in racing." Unser had thirteen top five finishes at Indianapolis, including second place finishes in 1967, 1972 and 1983.
His race high (63) lap leading run in the 87th "Indianapolis 500" on the way to fourth place was a good race.
