1955 doubled die cent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1955 doubled die cent is a minting error that occurred during production of the one cent coin at the United States Mint, in 1955.
In 1955, one of the working obverse dies at the Philadephia Mint was misaligned on the second blow from the working hub, thus resulting in a doubled image.
A seemingly similar error to the 1955 doubled die is die deterioration doubling, or "poor man's double die." It is caused when the design on a worn die becomes eroded and distorted.

Die making - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Die makers are skilled craftspeople who typically learn their trade through a combination of academic course-work, hands-on instruction and a substantial apprentice period.
This is called hub doubling, and results in such spectacular coins as the famous 1955 doubled die cent.
Die Deterioration Doubling is most prevalent on the date and mintmark because these fine details are alone in the middle of the field, and the metal must flow into these without the help of other valleys nearby.

A concise description of how doubled dies occur
We chose this explanation for simplicity, but keep in mind that doubled die doubling can occur when the master hub is impressing the master die, when the master die is impressing the working hub, and when the working hub is impressing the working die, or a combination of any of these.
This class occurs when a die is used for one hubbing, and a die with a distorted hub used for a subsequent hubbing, creating an image overlapping, and spread irregularly toward the rim.
A die that was hubbed normally the first time, but the hub or die was tilted for a subsequent impression so that the hub either made partial contact with the die at one point, or a full impression that was deeper at one edge than at the other.

After the die is polished, the fake coins struck from the die will show a granular appearance with some loss of detail on the coin's relief, which was incuse on the die.
Detection can sometimes be made based on fine details, such as die polish lines, that are known to be present on the original die(s) but did not transfer to the spark erosion die.
A depression around the mintmark does not necessarily indicate an alteration, as the depression could be caused from raised metal on the die from punching the mintmark into the die.
