Yugoslav literature. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
The remarkable 16th-century flowering of learning and literature in the Adriatic trading city of Ragusa (now Dubrovnik) was a reflection of the Italian Renaissance, spread by commercial contacts and by Slavic youths educated at Padua.
Literature suffered a decline in the 18th cent., when Dubrovnik’s political independence was crushed, and a general imitation of foreign writings took hold.
With the breakup of the Yugoslav federation in the early 1990s and the collapse of the effort (begun in 1918) to form a unified South Slavic nation, the differences between the major South Slavic literatures are likely to widen.

Literature courses deal broadly with genres and themes from the past and present, and teach students how to read and analyze texts; creative writing courses foster, in qualified students, the development of serious creativity; rhetoric courses deal with both the theory and practice of communication as well as the history of oral and written argument.
Courses in literature, rhetoric, and creative writing numbered 100-149 are entry-level, intended mainly for freshmen; courses numbered 150-299 are open to second-semester freshmen or above; courses numbered 300-499 are open only to juniors, seniors, or those who have previously taken three courses in literature.

NAS Press Release - Education Today and in 1955
The contemporary sample of seniors did better than the 1950s high school graduates on four questions relating to music, literature, and science, about the same on seven questions pertaining to geography, and worse on four questions about history.
Although the relatively small number of college graduates in the latter sample limits the degree of confidence one can have in the comparisons, the consistency and size of the knowledge superiority displayed by the 1950s college graduates strongly suggests that it is real.
The overall average of correct responses for the entire general knowledge survey was 53.5% for today's college seniors, 54.5% for the 1955 high school graduates, and 77.3% for the 1955 college graduates.

 ICELAND LITERATURE
The Icelandic Literature was created by the inhabitants of Iceland from the country's settlement in the 9th century AD to the present.
Not as free as Eddic verse, it is strictly syllabic in structure and is characterized by the use of kennings: complex periphrases that at their best are beautiful metaphors, but also sometimes give skaldic poetry the effect of riddles.
After Iceland's loss of independence in the 1260s, Icelandic literature declined, and from about 1400 to the 19th century hardly any literary prose was written, with the exception of a notable Icelandic translation of the Bible by 16th-century Protestant theologians.

The Romantic movement of the 19th crentury produced a long line of very fine poets who celebrated the glorious past of the Commonwealth and the natural beauties of the Icelandic landscape, charging the ancient language with new vigour and urging people to awake to a new age of hope and brighter prospects.
