 Giants-Dodgers Covers a Lot of Ground (washingtonpost.com)
Brooklyn's Leo Durocher was fired by Branch Rickey midway through the season (his ninth as the Dodgers' skipper), and was quickly hired by the Giants, a sequence of events that shocked fans of both teams.
Traded from Brooklyn to New York after the 1956 season, he opted to retire and the trade was negated.
Indeed, Brooklyn got its moniker from Giants fans who derisively referred to their rival's fans as Trolley Dodgers.

The Village News :: Snider among Legends of Baseball at Hall of Champions
The Dodgers’ final World Series before leaving Brooklyn was in 1956, when they lost to the Yankees. Snider’s World Series feats include hitting four home runs apiece in the 1952 and 1955 competitions, but he is also known for going hitless in three at-bats in the fifth game of the 1956 World Series.
Snider had two infielder choppers for base hits that day and the Dodgers won the game. After the final game of the season Snider resumed his quest to throw a ball out of the Coliseum and did so on the first attempt. “I got my $200 back,” he said.
Although the 1955 Dodgers were the only Brooklyn team to win the World Series, Bavasi and Snider both felt that the 1952 team was better than the 1955 squad. “I think that was the best team that I played on,” Snider said.

Shapiro tells the story of the fight between O'Malley and Moses, and he truly captures how important the Dodgers were to Brooklyn.
This book, by Michael Shapiro, brought out many interesting facts which I did not know, such as it was only at the end of the season did the Dodgers actually sell out any games.
Although long time Brooklyn residents may disagree, Shapiro points to Moses as the real villain behind the Dodgers' exit from New York.
