The Olympics were of fundamental religious importance, contests alternating with sacrifices and ceremonies honouring both Zeus (whose colossal statue stood at Olympia), and Pelops, divine hero and mythical king of Olympia famous for his legendary chariot race, in whose honour the games were held.
In 1956 the Games were boycotted by the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland, because of the withdrawal of the Hungarian Uprising by the Warsaw Pact - furthermore the Melbourne Games were boycotted by Cambodia, Egypt, Iraq and the Lebanon, because of the Suez Crisis.

The 1940 Winter Olympics had originally been awarded to Japan, and were supposed to be held in Sapporo, but Japan had to give the Games back in 1938, because of the Japanese invasion of China in the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945).
In 1952, the Winter Games came to Norway, considered to be the birthplace of modern skiing.

The idea for the Olympics to come south was first mooted back in the 1920s, when James Pa' Taylor, only the second person from Australasia to be appointed to the International Olympic Committee, lobbied for Australia to be awarded the 1936 Olympics.
There were many people involved in the efforts to persuade the IOC that Melbourne should have the 1956 Games, not the least Frank Beaurepaire, the great swimmer who won six medals in an Olympic career stretching from 1908 to 1924.
But eventually, on Thursday, 22 November 1956, some 103,000 spectators packed into the Melbourne Cricket Ground in brilliant sunshine (after almost two months of rain) to watch a young athlete later to become one of the most famous in the world, Ron Clarke, run into the arena with the Olympic flame.

ALAIN MIMOUN, the Gold Medallist in the Marathon event at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, will be visiting Melbourne from 18 - 24 November at the invitation of Athletics International.
Alain now 79 years of age will unveil a monument to mark the turning point of the 1956 Olympic Marathon at Princes Reserve on Princes Highway, East Oakleigh at noon on Saturday 20th November.
He added, "our club deemed his unveiling of the monument to be an important part of Melbourne’s Olympic history".
