Landscape archaeology and surface survey are well treated by Wilkinson and Bintliff, the latter of whom makes a rather unexpected declaration of the importance of fieldwork and the ordering of resulting data over and above his own contributions to 'theory debates in archaeology' (400).
Art and archaeology (and anthropology to a lesser extent) are compared and contrasted in a multi-authored chapter (Corbey, Layton, Tanner), which is indeed one of the most useful for any person working in visual culture.
In one instance we learn that archaeology was invented as a discipline alongside art history during the 18th century (357), while in another we are told that its common origin is with anthropology in the late 19th (473).

The most comprehensive and articulate argument for a global historical archaeology has just been formulated by Charles E. Orser (1996), who has argued for a definition of the discipline as the study of the modern world, characterized by a single economy that is colonial, international and expanding.
Historical archaeology is thus considered to be a multidisciplinary field linked to anthopology and history, which deals with the post-prehistoric past, and seeks to understand the global nature of modern life (Orser and Fagan 1995: 14).

I am currently working on a monograph on the research conducted at Paradise Park during the past several years, which should be submitted for publication in the summer of 2002.
This kind of short-term field experience is extremely important for students who are deciding what career they wish to pursue and contributes to the knowledge base of Jamaicans in general.
My colleagues and I have long held the view that archaeology and history will not be valued and appreciated until the general populace holds this view.

One occurrence was at Higgins Flat Pueblo near the San Francisco River, three miles northwest of Reserve, New Mexico, and seventy miles northwest of the Mattocks Ruin, According to Hugh C. Cutler (1956:182, 183) about 900 seeds of Datura meteloides were found on Floor 2 of Room E, a room that yielded ceremonial objects.
The other 1956 specimen is from one of the Richards Caves in Verde Valley, near Montezuma Castle in central Arizona.

These insurance maps are extremely useful tools in determining when buildings have been added to or razed.
