COSMOS: Science Literacy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Science for All Americans (SFAA) is essentially a definition of adult science literacy that makes sense, which may explain why it has received the attention of many countries in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia, and of international organizations such as OECD and UNESCO.
All of the sciences presume that the things and events in the universe occur in consistent patterns that are comprehensible through careful and systematic study.
Science literacy also includes seeing the scientific endeavor in the light of cultural and intellectual history and being familiar with some powerful ideas that cut across the landscape of science, mathematics and technology.

Science in The Industrial Revolution   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
It is but a small circle of scholars who have ventured to specify those instances in which “science” made identifiable contributions to the industrial technology of this period, and even such modest claims as these individuals have made have not gone unchallenged by criticism of the use of the word science in this particular context.
The modern definition of science is the one which demands algebraic formulae offering design parameters and predictions of the performance of industrial techniques and which thereby finds virtually no expression in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century industrial technologies.
The case for science in British industry rests heavily upon other Fellows, as well, for the participation of early industrialists in the Royal Society is a major emphasis of the argument by identification.

SCIENCE AND THE HUMANITIES   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Despite this inextricable intertwining of science and human experience, many Americans, while readily endorsing increased funding for science, find the culture of science inaccessible, dismissing their capacities to derive satisfaction from science literature or learning and, more significantly, absenting themselves from discussion of public policy issues involving science and technology.
It is also hoped that the project will have longterm benefits for public understanding of the sciences and humanities....” Suggested topics included the conception and very definition of science; understanding nature and mind; science, engineering, and social change; the history of science and evolution of engineering; and science and its cultural context.
The shift is also reflected in the slightly different thrust of the topics suggested in the 1995 guidelines, which focused on the social context of science; political culture and science; understanding nature and mind; approaches to knowledge; and science and its cultural context in the United States.

 Forbidden Science: Journals, 1957-1969:Vallee, Jacques:1556431252:eCampus.com
He describes the hopes and fears he felt every day as new sightings were reported and as he and his colleagues struggled to develop research methodology for this new phenomenon.
In the midst of a swirl of media attention and public hunger to understand UFO sightings, Dr. Vallee recorded in his diaries not the cold, official face of science but the human side of research, as a few people eagerly tried to meet the challenge of the unknown.
Forbidden Science questions how we use scientific research to describe anomalous phenomena in the physical world and challenges us to face our assumptions about ourselves and the tenuous concept we call reality.

Rather, it acts as though basic science were a luxury to be indulged in, or ignored, with impunity.
The question needs to be considered very carefully in the wealthy Western world, and especially in the U.S., as to whether prosperity itself is not a corroding influence when it is not shared by the people who must make the more fundamental scholarly advances.
