1958 Atlantic hurricane season - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hurricane Cleo, a Cape Verde-type hurricane which avoided land, formed from a tropical wave that strengthened into a tropical storm on August 11 in the eastern Atlantic.
Hurricane Cleo is one of only four Category 5 hurricanes since 1953 to not be retired, as most other Category 5's impacted land in some form (however, the name Cleo was retired in 1964 after a different Hurricane Cleo).
Hurricane Ella had a role in the Cuban Revolution: as the government troops of Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar stayed in their barracks during the storm while the rebels made progress under cover of Ella.

 Mid-Atlantic Weather Station: Hurricane News
Hurricane activity over the Atlantic has fluctuated naturally over decades going back as far as 1900, and it was unlikely that global warming could be having a significant impact, many researchers said.
The strongest winds of a hurricane are in its eyewall, the swirling complex of clouds and rain that rotate around the eye of the storm.
Hurricane forecasting is part science and part art, but hurricane forecasters are scientists at heart and they don't like it when the data tell lies.

EXTENDED RANGE FORECAST OF ATLANTIC SEASONAL HURRICANE ACTIVITY FOR 2005
Thus, based on this analysis, we expect 2005 to be an active hurricane season and in line with the average of eight of the last ten years (1995, 1996; 1998-2001; 2003, 2004).
Atlantic basin NTC can be skillfully hindcast, and the strength of the Atlantic Ocean thermohaline circulation can be inferred as SSTA* from North Atlantic SST anomalies in the current and prior years.
Although many active Atlantic hurricane seasons feature no landfalling hurricanes, and some inactive years experience one or more landfalling hurricanes, it is found that, on average, the more active the overall Atlantic basin hurricane season is, the greater the probability of U.S. hurricane landfall.

The extremely active 1995 Atlantic hurricane
The 1995 Atlantic hurricane season was a year of near-record hurricane activity with a total of 19 named storms (average is 9.3 for the base period 1950-1990) and 11 hurricanes (average is 5.8), which persisted for a total of 121 named storm days (average is 46.6) and 60 hurricane days (average is 23.9), respectively.
Hurricane Luis was of particular interest during 1995 because of its long duration at IH status and its destructiveness in the Caribbean.
Despite the lack of positive contribution of Sahelian rainfall toward the 1995 Atlantic hurricane season, the combined conducive effects of low vertical wind shear, low SLPs, warm SSTs, humid TPW, a westerly phase of the stratospheric QBO moderate and a La Niño event allowed for the 1995 hurricane season to be extremely active.

Although the hurricane force squalls were reported briefly in the northeastern semicircle on August 14, Becky never reached full hurricane intensity.
Fortunately Hurricane Cleo remained at sea throughout its life span and there were no reports of any severe damage to shipping nor any deaths reported, despite the fact that the storm crossed the principle transatlantic shipping lanes.
Hurricane Helene was not only one of the most intense storm of 1958, but it was the most destructive.

Hurricane Audrey hit Cameron, Louisiana as a Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, demolishing the town and killing four hundred.
Audrey was the strongest U.S. landfall in June, the strongest hurricane before July 1, and caused the most deaths in a U.S. hurricane (390) before 2005's Hurricane Katrina.

 Hurricane Hollow Weather
The Atlantic Hurricane Basin is one that has the potential to make an impact on a large area of the Coastal United States, Caribbean Islands, and Central America.
This Atlantic Hurricane Season 2006, we will be looking for annual and seasonal indicators, based on averages of 10 named storms, 6 hurricanes, 3 major hurricanes(100%) respectively, which is historically shown in data through the world wide web, and also known as being a percentage that is followed by many forecasters as well as researchers.
With a weaker Atlantic Ridge, which occurs with a neutral or negative NAO, we can watch for the SST's in the Eastern Atlantic to be average, this year, as we have seen the years of active Tropical Cyclogenesis in the 1990's.

FOXNews.com - Study Claims Hurricane's Power Depends on Pollution - Science News | Current Articles
According to scientists such as Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, the effects of global warming on Atlantic hurricane activity are negligible compared to that of the AMO.
Emanuel and Mann, however, believe that the change in hurricane activity normally attributed to the AMO can be explained by the rise and fall of aerosol concentrations during the late 20th century.
Hurricane activity in the Atlantic was thus lower than it might otherwise have been during this period.

Virmani, J.I. and Weisberg, R.H. The 2005 hurricane season: An echo of the past or a harbinger of the future?
Virmani and Weisberg compared various meteorological properties of the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons with those of prior seasons.
It would appear that the 2005 hurricane season was not as unique as many people have made it out to be, and that there is no compelling reason to ascribe whatever degree of uniqueness it may have possessed to recent global warming.

To qualify as a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane intensity scale, maximum sustained winds must exceed 155 mph (135 kt).
Through 1998, only twenty-two Atlantic storms have reached this intensity, and only eight were of category 5 strength at time of landfall.
Of these 22, only two made U.S. landfall: the 1935 Florida Keys hurricane and Hurricane Camille, which hit the Mississippi coastline in 1969.
