McHale's impressions notwithstanding, Twomey was certainly no slacker, as he proved repeatedly in an auspicious fourteen season, 189 game league career that spawned a Copeland Trophy in 1956, membership of Collingwood's 1953 premiership side, and regular interstate selection for the VFL.
The road to recovery was long and hard, but after several aborted comeback attempts he finally returned to something approaching his best late in the 1958 season, a year which saw him again receive the red and whites' premier individual award.
When John Todd finally retired as a coach in 2002 he had overseen a West Australian league record 721 games, and masterminded half a dozen premierships, besides becoming a veritable legend of the game at two clubs.

After two seasons in the NTFA with North Launceston, where he played mostly as a forward, Bob Johnson was forced to stand out of football for the whole of 1958 while seeking a clearance to VFL club Melbourne.
Johnson made his VFL debut with Melbourne as a nineteen year old, in 1954, and went on to play a total of 159 games and boot 228 goals for the club over the course of the next nine seasons.
Eric Johnson was a prolifically talented rover who enjoyed an illustrious ten season career with Norwood during which he played 124 league games and booted 92 goals.

On joining North Melbourne from Strathbogie John Law was used initially as a forward but his resolute, straight ahead style was much better suited to a half back flank, which was where he ended up spending the vast majority of his twelve season, 219 game VFL career.
Known affectionately as 'John L.' Leedham represented Tasmania in the 1947, 1953 and 1958 carnivals, performing particularly creditably at Adelaide in 1953 when, despite a disastrous winless series, he was chosen as the sole Tasmanian representative in the inaugural All Australian team.
He began his career with Hobart, where he was a member of premiership teams in 1954, 1959 and 1960, won the 1957 William Leitch Medal, and was a dual winner of the club's best and fairest award.
