I first read about "India, Matri Bhumi", an amazingly visionary though largely forgotten documentary from Roberto Rossellini, when one of my favorite critics Andrew Sarris mentioned it in his Film Culture essay on Rossellini back in the 60s.
The documentary is basically an episodic portrait on India, circa 1957-1958; It captures life in flux at that moment in time.

 Language in India
Now-a-days no Hindu of Upper India dreams of writing in any language but Urdu or Hindi when he is writing prose; but when he takes to verse, he at once adopts one of the old national dialects as the Awadhi or Tulsi Das or the Braj Bhasha of the blind bard of Agra.
Similarly, in India the knowledge of Persian was limited to a small number of the people under the Muhammadan Kings, not chiefly because Persian was repellent, but for want of cheap books and for want of an organized attempt to spread it among the people.
In India it would be quite possible, for example, to widely spread a knowledge of English up to the Upper Primary Standard, say; that would not be changing the language of the people, but the attempt would be so expensive, and so utterly useless, that it is wise that nothing of the kind is done.

Delegates to the NAPT Fourth Commonwealth Conference in 1955 heard Dr. P.V. Benjamin, Adviser in Tuberculosis to the Government of India, describe the problem of tuberculosis in the country and the measures, preventive and therapeutic, being made to control it.

The method of attack upon tuberculosis in under-developed countries has been much discussed, but little experience has been obtained in practice; moreover each country presents its own peculiar problems - and it was felt that, before embarking upon a nationwide scheme, further information should be obtained relevant to its use in India.
