  Archaeology
Archaeology is a historical science aimed at the discovery and understanding of past human behaviour through the study of material remains.
As a result, archaeology is able to investigate not only the recent past and subjects to some degree already documented, but also epochs beyond the reach of memory and before the spread of writing.
In the West, undergraduate and MA archaeology programs were established at the universities of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and to the PhD level at the universities of Alberta and British Columbia.

John Patrick Hale: Define Historical Archaeology, Please
Archaeology’s role, then, is to explicate and explain that which came prior to the development of the discipline of anthropology, since the present is clearly the purview of cultural anthropologists.
According to James Deetz (1996), a popular definition of historical archaeology is, “The archaeology of the spread of European cultures throughout the world since the fifteenth century, and their impact on and interaction with the cultures of indigenous peoples” (5).
Historical archaeology — The study and interpretation of the material remains, both environmental and cultural, of societies in the remote and recent past, and the relationship between those remains and documentary history, towards a goal of understanding the society in its entirety including the cultural processes at work within and without the society.

When performed for the entire raster, the result is a binary image, those areas of the landscape which have a direct line of sight from the target cell coded as a 1 and those with no line of sight with 0.
Such images are commonly referred to as visibility maps or viewshed maps and have already found some application within archaeology: Gaffney and Stancic, for example, investigating the Greek period of the Island of Hvar, generated a viewshed map for the watchtower at Maslonovik, Hvar.

Leslie Grinsell, though an amateur archaeologist most of his life, to a great extent determined the direction of field archaeology in the second half of this century.
Leslie Grinsell made active field archaeology his own in an age which had yet to look beyond the glamour of excavation.
His directness, whimsical humour and sound common sense were legendary, as were his walking, youth-hostelling and penchant for traditional afternoon teas of the cream variety.

David Down became interested in the subject of archaeology when, in 1958, he took his family on an adventurous journey by car and home-built caravan all the way from India to England.
As it was a never-to-be-repeated journey of a lifetime, he did the thing properly, parking the caravan among ancient ruins, sometimes for days on end, while he explored them thoroughly.
That first tour had to be cut short when the Six-day War broke out between Israel and its Arab neighbours, but instead of becoming discouraged, the experience only whetted David's appetite for archaeology and adventure.
