Science is first and foremost a set of logical and empirical methods which provide for the systematic observation of empirical phenomena in order to understand them.
Science consists of several specific sciences, such as biology, physics, chemistry, geology, and astronomy, which are defined by the type and range of empirical phenomena they investigate.
Finally, science is also the application of scientific knowledge, as in the altering of rice with daffodil and bacteria genes to boost the vitamin A content of rice.

For this report, 11 of the 117 programs were selected for visits by an observer highly trained and experienced in mathematics and/or science education.
The programs, which were designed by the institutions with little NSF involvement, incorporated both classroom and laboratory experience and covered the biological and physical sciences and mathematics.
In general, the observers were impressed by the interest and enthusiasm displayed by the students and staff.

In keeping with the space exploration initiatives started by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1955, and these first satellite launches, the SSP was established as a springboard to attract promising students to science and engineering.
This first SSP was made possible by the sponsorship of Cal Tech, Hughes Aircraft Co., Pomona College, The Thacher School, the Ralph B. Lloyd Foundation, and the Helms Foundation.
The Summer Science Program is now run through the cooperation of the California Institute of Technology, Harvey Mudd College, Pomona College, Stanford University, and UCLA, and is an accredited observing affiliate of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

 School of Computer Science - History 1959 - 1969
They also taught several optional courses on programming and other aspects of computer science that were introduced into the degree programmes in Mathematical Sciences during the 1960s.
The Computer Centre is given the status of an academic department in the Faculty of Science and Engineering for the purpose of running degree courses in computer science.

 Nebula Science Fiction: 1952-1959.
Nebula Science Fiction was edited in Glasgow (and published from #6) by the 18 year-old Peter Hamilton and ran for 41 issues before it ceased publication in June 1959.
Hamilton left school in 1952 and originally intended to produce paperbacks using his family's printing firm during idle moments but was advised that magazines were more profitable.
The large-digest-size magazine retained its distinctive logo and size (215x135mm) throughout its publication and joined New Worlds, Science Fantasy and Authentic as part of the 50s UK sf magazine revival and remained the only professional sf magazine published in Scotland until Spectrum Science Fiction in 2000.

The breakup earlier this week of a partnership that pioneered commercial DNA research is expected to lead to public release of a stream of genetics data.
Haseltine's medical product development firm, Human Genome Sciences Inc. (HGS) in Rockville, Maryland, and Venter's nonprofit DNA sequencing center, The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in Rockville, effectively ended business relations on 20 June.
Venter, on the other hand, says that even at a cost of $38 million, TIGR's new freedom is "worth every penny." Venter is celebrating by releasing raw DNA sequence data from 11 microorganisms, including chromosome 2 of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum.
