London Underground 1972 Stock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the early 1970s the 1938 Tube Stock on the Bakerloo and Northern Lines was becoming due for replacement.
Although almost identical looking, the 1972 Tube Stock had a guard and door controls in the rear carriage, and was not compatible with 1967 Tube stock (though in recent years some 1972 carriages have been adapted to run with the 1967 Tube stock on the Victoria Line).
With the entry of the 1983 Tube Stock on the Jubilee in 1984, the 1972 Mark 2 stock was transferred to the Northern Line, then subsequently to the Bakerloo Line where it remains in service.

London Underground Gate Stock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Such stock was probably first seen on the wooden cars of the early New York steam hauled Elevated Railroads of the 1870s, themselves a light weight development of standard wooden rolling stock used in the United States.
In terms of London Transport Gate Stock was the principal form of rolling stock on virtually every London deep level (tube) railway from the City and South London railway, when trains were loco-hauled, through to the universal introduction of air operated doors by 1929.
This stock continued to run as Gate Stock until 1922, when the gates began to be replaced by air-operated doors; the last of the gates disappeared from the Piccadilly Line in June 1929.

Tube gauge cars are 750mm (2 ft 6 in) lower in height than surface stock, with a floor height above rail level of 610mm (2 ft) compared with 980mm (3 ft 3 in) on surface stock.
The doors on 1992 tube stock trains are wider than on other trains on the Underground to allow speedier entry and exit for passengers, and are mounted on the outside of the trains to provide more internal space.
They share with 1967 tube stock the design feature of wrap-round driver's windows, but they are manually driven by the train operator, with a guard to control the operation of the doors.

Originally it had been intended to replace the Central Line stock by trains of 1960 tube stock but there was insufficient time to test the prototypes thoroughly because of the need to provide increased accommodation in readiness for the Eastern Region suburban electrification at the end of 1960.
The cars of the 1959 and 1962 tube stocks were numbered in the same series, the Piccadilly cars in the earlier batch and the Central cars in the later.
Until recently the differences between the two stocks were not readily apparent, the principal feature being that the 1959 stock has a combined motor generator alternator unit whereas the 1962 stock has a motor alternator unit with rectifier.

EXCLUSIVE FIRST EDITIONS The London 1938 Tube Stock
With the expansion of the London tube system in the 1930's there was a need for modern new trains to handle the growing numbers of people using the Underground system.
The 1938 stock trains were designed to operate in the very confined space of the deep bore tube tunnels.
The 1938 stock was used primarily on the Northern, Bakerloo, Piccadilly and Central lines and remained in service for almost 50 years, and some are still in service 64 years later.

 CULG - Northern Line
The tube was 3.1m (10'2") in diameter in the northern section, and 3.2m (10'6") in the straighter southern section, to allow for the extra sway of the faster trains; some later sections were 3.51m (11'6") in diameter to provide better ventilation.
The two tube mouths are then on each side of this line; the tubes connect to the outer faces, and the depot lines to the inner faces, of the two island platforms at East Finchley.
The 1972 Tube Stock formerly found on the line was finally withdrawn on 1999-02-03, and the 1959 Tube Stock on 2000-01-@@.

Cravens Heritage Trains: 1962 Train Stock
To accelerate the replacement of the pre-1938 stock on the Central Line as a temporary measure 57 trains of the 1959 Stock operated on the Central line.
The 1959 stock was then returned to the Piccadilly Line less the 57 NDMs that were incorporated into the 1962 Stock fleet.
Following deliveries of the 1973 Stock the 1959 Stock was transferred to the Northern Line, allowing the first withdrawals of 1938 Stock in the mid 1970s.

 SQUAREWHEELS.org.uk - 1959 tube stock
The upshot of this was that a total of 31 trains of 1959 stock operated the Bakerloo Line between 1983 and 1989, forming the complete stock allocation for that line from 21 November 1985 until some point after April 1986.
A programme of further modifications to the new 1995 stock trains meant that there would not be reliably enough to provide the full service the while, and this gave 1959 stock (and the last few Guards) a little breathing space until January 2000.
Not a single car of ordinary "silver" 1959 stock has been kept on the Underground (unlike the 1962 stock, of which a score of cars operates in the engineering fleet); however, former Northern Line regular traveller Mike Kelly acquired DM 1304 and had begun restoring it to mid-life condition in a Herefordshire garden.

As the converted Q stock cars were originally built of steel it was necessary to paint them in an aluminium finnish to match the unpainted exterior of the new build R stock cars.
The internal layout was exactly that of the 1938 stock and the external layout differed from that stock only in respect of a more flat front and the use of aluminium alloy for the body skin, which was left unpainted as per the R49 stock.

 NASCAR.com - Evolution of a stock car: Part III - February 6, 2002
Despite accruing the knowledge of what it took to win Grand National races, the period was interesting in that both engine and body configurations went through several "generations" and radical changes as race cars, by and large, matched what was pushed in the showrooms by the manufacturers.
One of the most interesting occurrences in 1959 came when the Ford Motor Company abandoned its "top of the line" Galaxy model to use its Thunderbird as the race car of choice.
The swapping of personnel is one part of stock car evolution that has been around since the beginning.

If you told me that they replaced the stock catted H-pipe with an X-pipe and straight pipe with no cats and they saw no power I'd say their dyno test routines need to be reviewed.
The stock cats are not so much a restrictive design as just placed in a poor location that makes the pipes effectively necked down and the gases exiting the cats have to change directions immediately on exiting the cats, this is bad for flow.
IMO Magnaflow's design is much better being so much closer to stock retaining all of the stock location O2 sensors with all of the advnatages of lower restriction and the added X-pipe torque advantage.

 About us
John formed Metromodels as a result of having struggled to build London Underground ‘tube’ train kits for his first London Underground exhibition model railway layout, 'Mill Ridge'.
The very limited number of models available were either too heavy, too difficult to build, did not run very well or were poorly detailed.
Constructed from etched brass, white metal and plastic injection moulded components, they are smooth running, lightweight miniature models of the prototype trains designed using both the original drawings and pictures of the prototypes.
